New 96 Percent Efficient, 3 mm x 3 mm ICs Help Expand Market Opportunities for Battery-Powered Applications
Oct. 14, 2003 - Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) announced a family of synchronous 1.5-A switch DC/DC boost converters with linear regulation functionality for battery-powered electronics. The converters reduce board space, provide up to 96 percent power conversion efficiency from an input voltage range of 0.9 V to 5.5 V, and enable designers to power innovative applications such as a white LED flash for wireless camera phones. TI's new TPS6102x family of converters support power supplies for personal digital assistants (PDAs), PC peripherals, wireless headsets and other products powered by either a one-cell, two-cell or three-cell alkaline, nickel-cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal-hydride (NiMH), or a one-cell lithium-ion (Li-Ion) or lithium-polymer (Li-Poly) battery. The highly flexible converters provide 200 mA from a 0.9-V input when using a single-cell alkaline battery. The TPS6102x can also be used for generating 5 V at 500 mA from a 3.3-V rail or a Li-Ion battery at up to 96 percent power conversion efficiency.
