National's CVM Enables Multiple Phone Functionality, Conferencing and SMS in Latest Cordless Phone Manufactured by IDT International

CVM (click for larger image) June 8, 2004 - National Semiconductor Corporation announced a cordless voice module (CVM) that integrates a radio transceiver and baseband with a complete protocol stack on a single board. This enables system designers to more easily and cost-effectively design a DECT or 2.4GHz cordless phone or add this functionality to their products. National developed the CVM in cooperation with RTX Telecom, a Denmark-based wireless product developer.

Because the CVM enables designers to easily integrate phone and data capabilities with a self-contained module, IDT International, which owns the Oregon Scientific brand, selected the CVM for use in its recently announced SMS628 cordless phone manufactured for PCCW, a telecom operator based in Hong Kong. The cordless phone allows 4-handset operation, multi-party conference, handset speakerphone, caller ID, short message service (SMS), broadcast message and personal assistance.

About the Cordless Voice Module
Two versions of the CVM are available. The SC14CVM2.4 uses National's SC14428 baseband controller, a CMOS chip optimized to handle all the audio, signal and data processing for a 2.4GHz ISM digital band handset or base station. The complete protocol stack and application interface are integrated in ROM code. RF for the SC14CVM2.4 is provided by the LMX4268, a radio transceiver integrated circuit optimized for the 2.4GHz system. As a result, the module has an excellent typical range of 350m outside and 75m indoors. The LMX4268 is a complete DCT radio transceiver compliant with the FCC standard.

The SC14CVM1.9 is optimized for the digital enhanced cordless telecommunications (DECT) standard. It is also equipped with National's SC14428 baseband controller and with the LMX4168, a radio transceiver integrated circuit. The LMX4168 has the same specifications as the LMX4268, but is specially designed for the 1.9GHz band and is compliant with the ETSI TBR06 standard.

Pricing and Availability
Samples of the CVM are available now and the module is priced starting at $24.80 in 1k volumes.
