Analog Devices Introduces DC/DC Controller With High Input Voltage Range

Analog Devices ADP1864

ADP1864 extends input voltage to 14- V and reduces cost by 40 percent over competing ICs

The ADP1864 is Analog Devices’ first constant frequency, current-mode, step-down DC/DC controller in TSOT (thin-small-outline-transistor package) offering 40 percent cost reduction over competing ICs. The device is well-suited for cost-conscious designers of 5-A distributed power systems – including set-top boxes, wireless base stations and medical instrumentation – who are looking to reduce the cost of their power supplies without sacrificing the performance of the integrated circuits they are using.

High Input Voltage, Tighter Regulation
The device’s 14-V input range provides greater design flexibility. It is well suited for low-cost 12-V power-supply wall bricks or systems requiring more than 10-V input voltages. Using Analog Devices’ in- package trim techniques, the on-board reference accuracy is three times better than the closest competing devices, reducing the overall system regulation error budget to five percent over temperature. The load line regulation of 1mV/A is twice that of competing devices.

The ADP1864’s additional features include internal soft-start, short-circuit protection, output over-voltage protection, input under-voltage protection, and programmable current limit. Current-mode control provides fast and stable load transient performance, while the 580 kHz operating frequency reduces the size of the on-board inductor required, freeing up valuable board space.

The ADP1864 works particularly well for point-of-load systems that supply digital signal processors and embedded floating-point processors’ I/Os, such as processors offered by Analog Devices.

Availability and Pricing
Available in full production quantities, the ADP1864 is housed in a 6-lead TSOT and priced at $1.05 in 1,000-unit quantities. The ADP1864 is specified over the extended industrial temperature range (–40 degrees C to +85 degrees C).
