Available today at 720 MHz, TI's New DSPs Offer More Performance for Digital Video, Imaging and Wireless/Telecom Infrastructure

Texas Instruments announced three new DSPs with record-breaking performance of 720 MHz, exceeding its own current record of 600 MHz.

Based on TIґs digital signal processing technology, these new DSPs are designed to boost multi-channel density, enhance multi-function flexibility and increase bandwidth for higher frame rates and better resolution.  The devices will allow digital video, imaging and wireless/telecom infrastructure customers to fully capitalize on the industryґs highest performance, enabling them to bring next-generation innovations to market quickly.

Available today, the 720 MHz TMS320C6416, TMS320C6415 and TMS320C6414 DSPs are based on the TMS320C64xTM DSP core and produced on TIґs advanced 130-nanometer copper process technology.

The three new DSPs include one MegaByte (MB) of on-chip high-speed memory and high-speed peripherals that accelerate applications and processing of real-time data.  The 720 MHz C6414 DSPґs 64-channel enhanced direct memory access (EDMA) controller delivers input/output efficiency that manages data transfer from system memory at gigabytes per second.  In addition, three multi-channel buffered serial ports (McBSPs) each support 128 time-division multiplex (TDM) channels as well as AC97 and IIS audio interfaces.

The 720 MHz C6415 DSP features 33-MHz, 32-bit peripheral component interconnect (PCI) and host port interface (HPI) connectivity for interprocessor communications.  In addition, the processor supports 50-MHz Utopia Level II ATM connectivity. Support for high definition (HD) video decoding applications is now real with this class of performance. For digital video head-end infrastructure systems, HD MPEG-2 video transrating can be achieved using a single 720 MHz C6415 DSP.

The 720 MHz C6416 DSP, the most highly integrated of the three, also features the on-board Viterbi and Turbo coprocessors to further improve the channel capacity of 3G wireless basestations.

The 720 MHz C64xTM DSPs are all code compatible with previous C64x and TMS320C62xTM designs, allowing customers to create software for todayґs devices and be confident that the investment will be preserved for higher-performance in the future.  Developers can use TIґs eXpressDSPTM software and development tools and reusable off-the-shelf software available from TIґs third-party network to increase time to market.  Production quantities of all three DSPs can be ordered today through TI distributors.
