Diodes Incorporated announced the DRDC3105 integrated relay driver. By integrating a complete solid-state relay driver into a single, surface-mount package, the DRDC3105 minimizes the PCB footprint, reduces the component count and improves the reliability of inductive load control circuits.
Providing a rugged interface between standard logic and 3V to 6V DC inductive loads, the relay driver is designed to handle relays, solenoids, incandescent lamps and small motors in a wide range of applications. From a 5V supply rail, DRDC3105 has the capability to drive coils rated at up to 2.5W.
The relay driver is offered in single and dual driver configurations, housed respectively in SOT23 and SOT26 packages, and can replace between 3 and 6 discrete components. With a Zener diode included across the device's bipolar transistor output, the need for an external free-wheeling diode is removed, and by clamping at 6.6V the Zener also sinks inductive currents to ground, thereby reducing noise due to EMI.

Integrating robust pre-biased transistor technology delivering high transient isolation between input and output, DRDC3105 will protect sensitive input circuitry and guarantee to put its output into a safe off-state condition when the input is lost or disconnected. The bipolar's low saturation characteristic means the device will drive current up to 0.5A through the coil when on and achieve near-zero current consumption in the off-state.
