New OptiMOS 40/60V Enables 96% Energy Efficiency Levels in Server Power Supplies

Infineon OptiMOS

Faster processing speeds are pushing up server and PC power consumption. This challenges AC/DC designers to improve system efficiency and power density while reducing system costs. Infineon introduced new OptiMOS™ 40V and 60V devices. This new power MOSFET family sets new standards for power density, system efficiency and switching performance, enabling power supply engineers to meet today's design challenges.

They do this by reducing the on-state resistance (RDS(on)) by 35% and the Figure of Merit (RDS(on) x Qg) by 45% relative to competitor devices. A monolithic integrated Schottky-like diode in the 40V SuperSO8 package (5mm x 6mm) leads to higher efficiency and a drastic reduction of the voltage overshoot. This, in turn, reduces the need for a snubber circuit and saves engineering effort and cost.

Infineon is the first semiconductor company to introduce a 1mΩ 40V MOSFET in a SuperSO8 package. This halves the number of MOSFETs in the synchronous rectification stage of a 1,000W server power supply, thus eliminating the need for paralleling and increasing power density dramatically.

The new devices are optimized for synchronous rectification in Switched Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) such as those deployed in servers and desktop PCs. They are also ideal for a broad range of industrial applications such as motor controls and fast-switching DC/DC converters. Solar applications also stand to benefit from the performance gains of these new MOSFETs. In typical photovoltaic topologies such as buck/boost configurations for power optimizers or resonant full bridge configurations for micro-inverters, both RDS(on) and switching characteristics are important. The BSC016N06NS device from the 60V family in a SuperSO8 package increases efficiency by 1.5% at 20% load in a solar micro-inverter.
