Denso Realizes Rapid EV Charging at Home

Denso

Denso Corp developed a system that enables to exchange electricity between an electric vehicle (EV) and a residential house.

With the system, an EV can be rapidly charged by using a storage battery set up near a house. In addition, electricity can be supplied from the battery of the EV to the house.

Denso developed the system for the "Next-generation Energy and Social System Demonstration Project," in which it cooperates with Toyota Motor Corp, etc. Thus far, it has been difficult to rapidly charge an EV with electricity as high as several tens of kilowatts at a residential house because it requires to upgrade an electricity contract, etc.

The new system rapidly charges an EV by using electricity stored in a storage battery placed near a house. Because electricity from a grid is not used for charging, it is not necessary to change electricity contracts. If an EV is charged for about 15 minutes, it can drive about 20km (approx 12.4 miles).

Denso also developed a function to control the charge/discharge of EV's and house's batteries by using a "home energy management system (HEMS)" to predict the travel distance of an EV and the amount of power consumed in the house. For example, it is possible to charge the battery of an EV or a storage battery used for a house with surplus electricity generated with photovoltaic panels instead of selling it.

The new system can be used not only with Toyota's EVs but also with Mitsubishi Motors Corp's EVs. Denso plans to start a field test of the system in 2013 in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
