Cypress's New USB-Serial Bridge Controllers First to Integrate CapSense® Touch Sensing and Battery-Charge Detection

 Family Enables Flexible Design with Configurable Serial Channels And Support for Windows, Mac, Android, and Linux Operating Systems

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. expanded its market-leading USB product portfolio, adding a unique family of USB-Serial bridge controllers. The new CY7C6521x family is the first to provide dual-configurable serial channels for UART/SPI/I2C communication along with industry-leading CapSense capacitive touch-sensing technology, enabling flexible design of human interface solutions. Cypress provides proprietary drivers to support multiple operating systems, adding to the design flexibility of the controllers. The family is also the first to integrate efficient battery-charge detection compliant to Version 1.2 of the USB-Implementers Forum (USB-IF) Battery Charging specification. Additionally, the USB-Serial controllers boast the industry’s lowest power consumption of 5 uA (standby current).

The new family includes three devices, all of which are certified by the USB-IF. The CY7C65211 and CY7C65215 offer single- and dual-configurable serial channels, respectively, with each capable of UART, I2C, and SPI communication. The CY7C65213 provides a low power USB-to-UART bridge controller. The new controllers target a wide range of applications, including medical equipment, industrial equipment, point-of-sales terminals, USB-to-UART and RS232 cables, gaming systems, and test and measurement equipment.

Cypress provides a software configuration utility for Windows that enables customers to select from multiple serial interfaces and features to create customized designs. This utility also assists customers in modifying various parameters, such as vendor and product IDs, string descriptors, and GPIO configurations, via the USB interface. USB-Serial integrates programmable memory used to store these configuration details. The utility, drivers, and application programming interfaces (APIs) provided by Cypress makes it very easy for customers to develop complete solutions with shorter design cycles, resulting in quick time-to-market.

Configurable Serial Channels

USB-Serial bridge controllers are the first in the industry to offer Configurable Serial Channels, allowing the user to select between UART, I2C or SPI interfaces. In the case of dual channel controller, the channels can be independently configured to UART, I2C or SPI interfaces, and simultaneously connect two devices with different serial interfaces.

Advanced Feature Support

Cypress USB-Serial bridge controller family integrates industry-leading CapSense technology to provide support for touch sensitive buttons. These controllers support up to 8 CapSense buttons with advance features like SmartSense Auto-Tuning and Water tolerance.

The USB-Serial bridge controllers have integrated battery-charger detection feature, to identify the type of power source on the USB port: like a USB wall adapter or PC. This feature is compliant to USB-IF Battery Charging specification ver. 1.2. The USB-Serial bridge controllers drive the battery management controller to enable faster battery charging, making the Cypress USB-Serial controllers ideal for portable devices.

End-to-end Solution

USB-Serial controllers do not require programming, the parameters of the controller and serial channels can be modified using an easy-to-use Configuration Utility. Cypress provides software drivers for the following Operating Systems – Windows, Mac, Android and Linux.

Availability
All of the new controllers are in production and available today from Cypress and authorized distributors. The CY7C65211 is offered in a 24-pin QFN package, while the CY7C65213 and the CY7C65215 are packaged in 32-pin QFNs.
