DigitalAnalogRF (click for larger image) June 8, 2004 - National Semiconductor Corporation introduced a new generation of seven low dropout (LDO) regulators designed to meet the unique power management needs of digital processor, analog and RF subsystems. National's new LDOs are optimized for cell phones, notebooks, PDAs, MP3 players and other handheld portable systems. They are also ideally suited for use in wireless LANs, medical and industrial equipment.

In the past, designers had to choose a general-purpose LDO to meet system requirements. Using National's new LP399x family of products, designers now have a portfolio of LDOs customized to meet the power needs of digital loads or RF and analog loads in mobile and handheld devices. With their small size, ultra-low dropout voltages and lower current usage during standby mode, these new CMOS linear regulators enable designers to create smaller devices with longer battery life.

To power digital cores, designers require excellent line and load transient response with sub-1 microfarad ceramic capacitors, output voltages as low as 0.8 volts as well as fast turn on-off times while consuming very little operating current. National's new products are:

LP3990 - This 150 mA CMOS linear regulator features preset output voltages between 3.3V and 0.8V, and is optimized to meet the requirements of portable and battery-powered devices. It offers the ideal balance between fast load transient response and low operating current. The LP3990 works without a reference bypass capacitor, saving space on printed circuit boards and reducing the overall bill of materials (BOM). Packaging options are large bump micro SMD, LLP® chip-scale and SOT23-5. Samples are available now. The price is $0.37 each in 1,000-unit quantities.

LP3992 - This 30 mA CMOS linear regulator is designed for digital loads. It is particularly well suited to power applications such as Bluetooth® baseband devices, where the controlled turn-on and turn-off times ensure the digital device does not fall into non-defined states. Samples are available now in SOT23-5 packages. The price is $0.35 each in 1,000-unit quantities.

LP3993 - National's new 80mA CMOS linear regulator offers very low operating current for mobile applications where fast start-up and good line and load regulation are important. Operating current of 10uA at 1mA load significantly increases standby time. The LP3993 also works without a bypass capacitor, reducing the overall PCB area and BOM. Packaging options are large-bump thin, micro SMD and SOT23-5. Samples are available now. The cost is $0.36 each in 1,000-unit quantities.

LP3994 - This new 50 mA CMOS linear regulator is designed for low operating current, low noise and accurate output voltage. The device operates in the 2.5v to 6.0v input range and has a low operating current range of 20uA when enabled. When disabled, the device draws virtually zero current. Packaging options are large-bump, thin micro SMD and LLP chip-scale packages. LP3994 samples are available now. The price is $0.36 each in 1,000-unit quantities.

LP3997 - This 250 mA CMOS linear regulator can supply up to 500mA peak output and features an 'out-of-regulation' error flag that indicates when the device's output is below the nominal voltage. LP3997 samples are available now. The price is $0.40 each in 1,000-unit quantities.

National's New Portfolio of LDOs for Powering RF and Analog Circuitry for Systems Such as Cell Phones, Notebooks, Wireless LANS and Other Mobile Devices
To power RF loads, designers require low noise, excellent power supply rejection ration (PSRR) and low dropout. National's LP3995 and LP3999 complement the company's successful LP3985 family by extending the output voltage range down to 1.5 volts. These new linear regulators are designed specifically for portable and wireless applications powered by Li-Ion and Ni-MH batteries. They offer device noise down to 25uVrms, improved PSRR to above 60 dB at 1 KHz, dropout performance to 60 mV at 150 mA. The products are:

LP3995 and LP3999 - These products are improved versions of the LP3985 with lower noise, lower output voltages and faster turn-on and active turn-off. The LP3995 is offered in a large-bump thin micro SMD and a LLP chip-scale packages. Samples of National's LP3995 are available now.
