Texas Instruments introduced a sub-1 GHz radio-frequency (RF) transceiver featuring low-power consumption, high integration and excellent RF performance. The CC1101 targets low-power wireless applications in alarm and security, automatic meter reading, industrial monitoring and control, and home and building automation. The CC1101 is an improved performance, code-compatible version of TI's successful CC1100 sub-1 GHz RF transceiver.
The CC1101 is designed for the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) and Short Range Device (SRD) frequency bands at 315, 433, 868 and 915 MHz. However, the device can also be easily programmed for operation at other frequencies in the 300-348MHz, 387-464 MHz and 779-928 MHz bands. Excellent frequency band and modulation format support enables compatibility with existing RF end equipments.
The CC1101 provides extensive hardware support for package handling, data buffering, burst transmissions, clear channel assessment, link quality indication and wake-on radio. The main operating parameters and the 64-byte transmit/receive FIFOs can be controlled via an SPI interface. In a typical system, the CC1101 will be used with a microcontroller (MCU), such as TI's MSP430 ultra-low-power MCUs, and a few additional passive components. Extensive digital features speed development time and reduce MCU strain, even at high data rates.
The CC1101's main improvements over the CC1100 include improved spurious response, better close-in phase noise, higher input saturation, improved output power ramping and extended frequency bands.
