Texas Instruments announced New Family of Boost Converters Satisfies High Current Requirements for Battery-Powered Devices

Texas Instruments TPS6103

4 mm x 4 mm ICs Provide 96 Percent Power Conversion Efficiency, Up to 1A Output

Texas Instruments announced a family of synchronous boost converters with integrated field effect transistors (FETs). The new converters save board space, improve power conversion efficiency and can deliver high currents for spinning media players, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other portable applications powered by a single-cell lithium-ion (Li-Ion), lithium-polymer (Li-Pol), or dual-cell alkaline or nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) battery pack.

TI's TPS6103x family of boost converters provide up to 96 percent power conversion efficiency, and is capable of delivering output currents of up to 1A at 5V with input supply voltages as low as 1.8V. The TPS6103x comes with fixed output voltage options as well as an adjustable option that can be adjusted by an external resistor divider.

Based on a fixed-frequency, pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller, the TPS6103x uses synchronous rectification to achieve maximum efficiency. In addition, the converter uses a power-save mode to increase efficiency at light loads, and an ultra-low quiescent current of 20µA to conserve battery life. The TPS6103x also can be disabled to minimize battery drain. In shutdown mode, the device consumes a mere 0.1µA and completely disconnects the load from the battery in order to avoid battery depletion.

Additional Features Include:

  • Synchronous, 96 Percent Efficient Boost Converter with 1000-mA Output Current from 1.8V Input
  • TSSOP-16 and 4x4 mm2 QFN-16 Package Options (Available in Second Quarter)
