Tyco Introduces Rugged Fiber Optic Interconnect for Aerospace & Defense

Tyco

The HD1.25 mm optical termination method (terminus) from Tyco Electronics is well suited for a range of aerospace and defense applications where a common terminus for all types of connections is required. HD1.25 mm termini are a physical contact method of connecting high density, low cost fiberoptic connectors.

Rugged Fiber Optic Interconnect for Aerospace Defense

HD1.25 mm termini are simple, yet robust while employing a compact design. The combination of simplicity, robustness and small geometries compare well with traditional MIL-T-29504 termini. With the HD1.25 mm termini, for example, a single terminus design can be used for all connectors. Other methods, on the other hand, may require several terminus designs which typically increase complexity and cost. Additionally, since a pull-resistant design is used, no strain relief is required on the backshell which further simplifies assembly. Also, a genderless contact is used which allows the use of the same contact on both connector halves; again, enhancing the product’s simplicity and ease of use.

Other design attributes such as compatibility with multimode and singlemode fibers make HD 1.25mm termini useful in a wider range of applications than other methods. Further, standard 1.25mm ferrules & sleeves along with LC type connector polishing add to ease of installation.

HD1.25 mm termini can be used in a number of connector shell styles including: size 8 quadrax cavity reducer, ARINC 600, LC adaptor, MIL-C-38999 and general purpose rectangular. Mean insertion loss (method B) for HD1.25 mm terminus is 0.10dB for singlemode and 0.07 dB for multimode.
