National Semiconductor Introduces Precision Voltage Reference Available in Five Accuracy Grades for Design Flexibility

National Semiconductor LM4132

National Semiconductor Corporation introduced the LM4132, a precision voltage reference available in five accuracy grades, A, B, C, D and E, for greater design flexibility. The grade A device has an initial accuracy of 0.05 percent, with a guaranteed temperature coefficient of 10 ppm per degrees C or less, while the grade E device has an initial accuracy of 0.5 percent and a temperature coefficient of 30ppm per degrees C.

The LM4132 performs like the best laser-trimmed bipolar references, but is manufactured in CMOS technology. This performance is made possible by the use of EEPROM registers for correction of curvature, temperature coefficient and accuracy on a CMOS bandgap architecture that allows package-level programming to overcome assembly shift. This is a shift in voltage accuracy and temperature coefficient that occurs during assembly of die into plastic packages and limits the accuracy of references trimmed with laser techniques.

Unlike other LDO references, the LM4132 is capable of delivering up to 20 mA of output current and does not require an output capacitor or buffer amplifier. These advantages and the SOT23-5 packaging are important in space-constrained applications.

Series references provide lower power consumption than shunt references, since they do not have to idle the maximum possible load current under no-load conditions. This advantage, combined with a low quiescent current of 60 µA and a low dropout voltage of 400 mV, make the LM4132 ideal for battery-powered solutions.
