Summit Microelectronics announces switch-mode battery chargers with JEITA support feature

Summit Microelectronics SMB328A SMB328B

The SMB328A and SMB328B are third-generation programmable battery charger ICs for single-cell Li-ion-, Li-polymer-, and Li-FePo4-powered systems. They integrate the largest feature set in the industry, including compatibility with all relevant industry standards, the USB 2.0 specification, USB On-The-Go supplement, JEITA safety guidelines, IEEE1725 Standard, and Chinese USB charging specification. Both products enable automatic matching between the ac/dc adaptor’s current capability and the portable device’s charging requirements.

The chargers are based on a 3-MHz switch-mode architecture, have a 3.5 to 6.2-V input range, and withstand continuous input overvoltage up to +20 V. The SMB328A allows for I2C control of parametric and functional performance, while the SMB328B operates in a GPIO-controlled configuration. The proprietary TurboCharge technology enables charging current levels up to 750 mA from a 500-mA USB source. The devices feature automatic input current limit to detect the maximum current capability of the ac/dc adapter. The devices incorporate an LDO that can provide instant-on power from the input source to critical system components, allowing them to wake up and perform system functions, even with a deeply discharged (dead), or missing battery. (Ea/10,000: SMB328A, $1.28; SMB328B, $1.23 — available now.)
