The R-78C-switching regulator features supply voltages of 1.8, 3.3, 5, 9, 12 and 15VDC output at max. 1A constant current. Under no-load operation the power consumption is a very low 1mA. The input voltage range can be increased to 42V. This is important for applications, where stable DC voltages are required from 24VAC power supplies.
Using more efficient components, Recom were able to double the power density to 15W/cm³. The efficiency under load condition from 20% and 100% is nearly constant. With only a few volts difference between input and output it still reaches 96%. Even with an extreme voltage spread values are still close to 90%.
As a rule switching regulators generate high noise levels. Not so the R-78C-family. Thanks to high switching frequencies of up to 400kHz, noise is filtered at the source. Comparative measurements with well-known competitors show that the new R78C-switching regulators have a 50% lower ripple. The approx. 15-40Vpp output ripple fully complies with EN 55022 for conducted/radiated emissions. For sensitive applications values below 5mVpp can be achieved with a simple, external 40kHz low-pass.
The regulators are approx. 1cm³ small with dimensions of 11.6 x 8.5 x 10.4mm (HxWxD) and have a TO-220 compatible SIP3-case. The output is overload and short circuit protected and switches into a “hiccup mode” under thermal overload. The operating temperature range is -40°C and +85°C without derating.
Applications for the R-78C include industrial controls, battery-powered devices, hand-held equipment, avionics, fan controllers and embedded designs, but this versatile switching regulator module will find applications in virtually every type of electronics. Recom's products are developed to ensure maximum life time by intensive testing in its specially equipped environmental laboratory. The R-78C-switching regulator is EN 60950-1 certified and RoHS 6/6 compatible.
