Micrel Inc. introduced the MIC24085x family, a fixed frequency, current-mode DC-DC converter with integrated power MOSFETs. The MIC24085x is optimized for +12 V rails and provides a flexible and cost-effective solution for distributed power systems and communication applications. The MIC24085A provides an adjustable output voltage from 0.9 V to 5.5 V; the MIC24085B/C/D/E/F provides fixed output voltages at 1.5 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 3.3 V and 5 V respectively. The MIC24085A-F are available in volume quantity with 1,000 quantity pricing starting at $0.53.
"Power supply designers face the challenge in finding an efficient, flexible and cost-effective solution that addresses the need for higher power density in the smallest possible real estate," noted Brian Hedayati, vice president of marketing for high performance linear and power solutions at Micrel. "Micrel's MIC24085 family will meet this challenge by offering an integrated 3 A solution with nearly a 26 percent reduction in footprint compared to solutions currently on the market. The MIC24085x also achieves over 90 percent peak efficiency and consumes less than 10 µA of supply current in shutdown mode."
The MIC24085 family of devices operates with an input voltage range of 4.5 V to 18 V and delivers 3 A of output current while operating at a fixed frequency of 1 MHz. Peak current mode architecture is used to provide fast transient response. At light load, the pulse frequency modulation (PFM) mode is used to boost overall efficiency.
The MIC24085 family improves system reliability by offering multiple protection features. These features include under-voltage lockout, internal soft start, cycle-by-cycle current limit, output overvoltage protection and thermal shutdown. Other features include an enable input and a PG (Power Good) output. The MIC24085 family is available in a 16-pin 3mm × 3mm MLF package with a junction operating range from -40°C to +125°C.
