MPC8349E PowerQUICC IITM Pro family based on e300 PowerPC® SoC platform delivers cutting-edge system peripherals for cost-sensitive applications

April 27, 2004 - Freescale Semiconductor, a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola Inc., announced the MPC8349E PowerQUICC IITM Pro family, the next generation of PowerQUICC II integrated communications processors designed for cost-sensitive yet compute-intensive networking, communications and pervasive computing applications.

Freescale developed the MPC8349E PowerQUICC II Pro family to address a wide range of embedded control applications, such as Ethernet routers and switches, wireless LAN (WLAN) equipment, embedded security devices, home and media gateways, network attached storage, industrial control, line cards, and healthcare-related, copier and printer imaging equipment. The MPC8349E family benefits Ethernet equipment developers by providing high-speed interconnects, robust processing performance, and leading-edge integration, resulting in low system-level cost, compact board space and low power usage.

The new MPC8349E family leverages the advanced e300 system-on-chip (SoC) platform—a flexible architecture similar to the e500 platform used by the award-winning PowerQUICCTM III communications processor family. Freescale's reusable SoC methodology makes it fast, easy and cost-effective to mix and match functional blocks and develop new SoC-based family members optimized for emerging markets. This SoC approach also enables Freescale to deliver highly integrated semicustom processor solutions for customers with unique application requirements. Responsive delivery of new processor products for communications and networking designs helps customers achieve faster time to market and longer time in market.

Additional MPC8349E family peripherals include a four-channel DMA controller, two dual asynchronous receiver/transmitters (DUARTs), a local bus controller operating at up to 133MHz, and dual I2C support.

The MPC8349E PowerQUICC II Pro family consists of the following processor products:
- MPC8349E: up to 667 MHz e300 PowerPC core, 64/32-bit DDR memory controller, dual PCI, dual Gigabit Ethernet, two Hi-Speed USB controllers (host, device and OTG), dual UART, dual I2C, integrated security engine
- MPC8347E: up to 667 MHz e300 PowerPC core, 64/32-bit DDR memory controller, single PCI, dual Gigabit Ethernet, two Hi-Speed USB controllers (host, device and OTG), dual UART, dual I2C, integrated security engine
- MPC8343E: up to 400 MHz e300 PowerPC core, 32-bit DDR memory controller, single PCI, dual Gigabit Ethernet, single Hi-Speed USB interface (host, device or OTG), dual UART, integrated security engine

(The "E" in these MPC8349E product names designates the availability of on-chip encryption. Versions of these products are also available without integrated security engines; non-secure versions do not have an E suffix in the ordering part number.)
