New Device Provides System Designers Greater Flexibility and the Ability to Balance End-System Performance and Cost
Atmel Corporation announced the release of a low-power dual 8-bit analog-to-digital (ADC) converter for multi-channel and low-power applications such as digital sampling oscilloscopes, ATE (Automated Test Equipment) and direct I/Q down-conversion. The new AT84AD004 device is a dual analog-to-digital converter, which provides 500 Msps sampling per channel encompassing 1 Gsps sampling from one channel in interleaving mode. It integrates dual on-chip track/holds that provide excellent dynamic performance over a 1 GHz input frequency bandwidth. The Effective Number Of Bits (ENOB) is typically 7.3 bits at 500 Msps / 250 MHz (Nyquist). This performance is complemented by an on-chip dual 1:2 or 1:1 selectable data output demultiplexers and power consumption of 700 mW per channel.
The new AT84AD004 device ADC shares the same form-fit-function as the popular AT84AD001 (dual 8-bit 1Gsps ADC) by offering full pin-to-pin compatibility and Atmel's exclusive 3-wire serial interface bus for auto-calibration of channel offset and gain, BIST (Built-in Self Test) and a sampling delay adjust for interleaving two analog channels.
Both A/D converters use an advanced high-speed process and a proprietary architecture that is ideally suited for under-sampling applications found in dual acquisition applications such as digital oscilloscopes and RF direct demodulation. These devices are packaged in the same 20 x 20 mm, 144-pin LQFP package, featuring differential (500 mVpp) inputs and LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Swing) (100 ohms) compliant outputs and are available in commercial and industrial grade temperature ranges.
The AT84AD004 is now in production in both commercial and industrial grades at a unit price of $100 for 1K-piece quantities.
