MAXIM: Fail-Safe 16-bit, 5V Tolerant I/O Port Expander with IRQ has I2c-Compatible Serial Interface with BUS Timeout

Maxim

SUNNYVALE, CA-March 4, 2003-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ:MXIM) introduces the MAX7311 general-purpose I/O expander. This device interfaces 16 5V-tolerant input/output ports with µPs and µCs through a 400kHz, 2-wire, SMBusTM/I2C-compatible serial interface. The MAX7311's INT-bar interrupt output provides a transition detect for I/Os configured as inputs.

All 16 ports power up as inputs, but can be configured by the master as either an input or output. Each 5V-tolerant I/O port is capable of sinking up to 43mA and has fixed logic thresholds compatible with 2.5V, 3.3V, and 5.5V logic levels.

The MAX7311 has input port registers, output port registers, configuration registers, bus timeout register, and polarity inversion registers. The SMBus timeout function can be enabled to alert the master when the bus times out for lock-up-free operation. Three address pins are 4-level logic to provide 64 unique slave IDs, easily connecting many I/O expanders on the same bus and avoiding address conflicts with other system devices.

The MAX7311 operates from a 2.0V to 5.5V supply and is available in 24-pin QFN (4mm x 4mm) TSSOP, SSOP, and SO packages over the automotive temperature range (-40°C to +125°C). The average supply current is 43µA (typ) and standby current is just 2.9µA (typ). Prices start at $2.10 (1000-up, FOB USA).
