ABLIC Inc. Launches the S-5420, One of the Industry's Smallest UV-A, UV-B Sensing Silicon Photodiodes

ABLIC S-5420

ABLIC Inc. (hereinafter “ABLIC”), the semiconductor manufacturer, launched the S-5420, a UV light photodiode manufactured from silicon that detects UV light from the UV-A to the UV-B range.

ABLIC - S-5420

The S-5420 comprises a high- and low-sensitivity photodiode. The S-5420 detects UV light without a filter by calculating the difference between high and low-sensitivity photodiode signals to remove visible light. The filter-less structure enables compact applications and prevents filter-induced attenuation. The compact transparent resin package expands the design flexibility of wearable devices.

This product is co-developed by a research team led by professors Shigetoshi Sugawa and Rihito Kuroda at the Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University.

Thanks to the use of silicon semiconductors, the S-5420 can measure UV light from the UV-A range, which causes skin blemishes and wrinkles, to the UV-B range, which causes sunburn. The small size of the S-5420 transparent resin package makes it easy to fit it into a variety of wearable devices allowing anyone to easily measure UV light intensity. Compact size also promises high design flexibility of industrial devices like UV irradiance and exposure meters.
