The first USB 3.0 controller to be developed by Cypress Semiconductor Corp. is the EZ-USB FX3 which is targeted at applications that need higher throughput than USB 2.0 such as video and imaging, printing, and scanning.
The EZ-USB FX3 (CYUSB3014) device is a flexible peripheral controller with a general programmable interface (GPIF II) that delivers a 5-Gbps USB 3.0 data pipeline, a configurable ARM9 processor core and backwards compatibility with USB 2.0.
With an internal bus architecture designed to operate at four times the USB 3.0 speeds, the EZ-USB FX3 can enable the transfer of large amounts of data such as that found in high-definition video streaming in imaging applications. In this application it can remove the need for compression on the peripheral side.
The GPIF II interface behavior is programmed with a state machine and it can operate as a master or slave in synchronous or asynchronous mode. It can have a 8/16/24/32 bit configuration, up to 100MHz.
The controller has 512KB of memory and includes critical USB APIs and implementation examples. Other serial interfaces include I2C (boot EEPROM), SPI, UART, and I2S while most unused IOs can be configured as GPIOs.
The power supply is a 3 to 6V Vbus or Vbatt supply with a 1.2V core and 1.8 - 3.6V IOs. Clocking is provided by a 19.2MHz crystal.
The EZ-USB FX3 CYUSB3014 controller is sampling now and full production quantities are expected in September of 2011. It is available in a 121-ball 10 x 10mm BGA package and in industrial temperature grade.
