Ethernet switches handle 1 B packets/s

Fulcrum Microsystems FM2000 FM3000 FM4000 FM6000

The FocalPoint FM6000 series of fully-integrated 10G and 40G Ethernet switch chips features the FlexPipe low-latency packet-processing pipeline, which can parse, modify, and apply multiple rules to traffic at over 1 billion packets/s in a completely deterministic manner. The devices maintain low cut-through packet latencies of less than 300 ns, regardless of configuration or features enabled.

The nine devices in the series offer different port configurations and total bandwidth, ranging from 160 to 720 Gbits/s. The ICs come with 10- and 40-Gbit/s ports in combinations of XAUI, SGMII, XFI/KR, and MLD/FR4 formats with the ability to drive SFP+ direct-attach copper cable directly without the need for an external PHY. They require only 1 W/10G port and come in a 1,521-pin BGA package. (From $10/10G port in high volume — available 2nd qtr 2011.)
