National Semiconductor's Offers New Precision and Low-Voltage Amplifiers

National Semiconductor Corporation announced nine single, dual and quad operational amplifiers (op amps) built on its proprietary VIP50 BiCMOS process technology. The products feature dramatic improvements in accuracy, power consumption and voltage noise for industrial, medical and automotive applications, as well as small size for portable applications. National introduced the first six amplifiers manufactured on this process in September 2005.

New Low-Voltage Amplifiers

National’s newest five low-power, low-voltage amplifiers, the LPV531, LMV654, LMV792, LMV796 and LMV797, offer world-class, gain-bandwidth product performance. For example, the 12-MHz, unity-gain bandwidth LMV654 quad amplifier provides 50 percent power savings over major competitive offerings. The LMV792 series features low noise of 5.8nV/sqrt Hz and low input bias currents of 100 fA across a wide temperature range from -40 degrees C to 125 degrees C. In addition, the LPV531 micropower op amp has adjustable gain-bandwidth control and a power-level adjust feature controlled with only one external resistor. The LPV531’s performance alternates from standby to full-power mode by varying the bias voltage on this same external resistor. These low-power, low-voltage products join the previously introduced LMV651, LMV791 and LPV511 single amplifiers and the LPV7215 micropower comparator.

National also is expanding its VIP50 precision portfolio with four new products, adding the LMP7704, LMP7712, LMP7715 and LMP7716 to the LMP7701 and LMP7711 single precision amplifiers introduced in 2005. The new single, dual and quad amplifiers provide higher performance, sub-220 uV of input offset with guaranteed input bias of less than 50 pA, and up to 12V operation.

Precision Amplifiers
The LMP7712 dual amplifier offers low current (50 fA) metal oxide silicon (MOS) inputs while still providing low-noise (less than 6nV/sqrt Hz) performance, which minimizes distortion and signal- conditioning errors. Precision thin-film resistors and well-matched transistor pairs are used to guarantee input offset errors of less than 180 uV, increase common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR of 100 dB) and increase power supply rejection ratio (PSRR of 100 dB) performance, while maintaining a low offset voltage drift (TCVos) of 1.75 uV/degrees C over the -40 degrees C to 125 degrees C temperature range.

The LMP7704 quad precision amplifier operates from 2.7V to 12V supply voltages and has rail-to-rail CMOS inputs with input-bias currents of 200 fA. Trim and design techniques eliminate the large offset glitch associated with conventional CMOS rail-to-rail input amplifiers, improving the input offset voltage of less than 220 uV across the entire common-mode voltage range (0V to 12V). The op amp also employs a patented correction technique to reduce the large temperature coefficient of the offset voltage commonly found in CMOS precision amplifiers. This product is available in a 14-lead TSSOP package.

Low-Noise Op Amp With Shutdown
The LMV792, LMV796 and LMV797 low-noise, CMOS input, dual operational amplifiers offer 5.8nV/sqrt Hz of flat band noise. Their low offset voltage of less than 1.35 mV and low temperature co-efficient of less than 1.8uV/ degrees C improve overall system accuracy. The 100 dB PSRR and CMRR provide the DC performance needed in high-performance applications. The LMV792 offers a shutdown feature that reduces power consumption to less than 1 uA when in idle mode. The LMV792 is available in a 10-lead MSOP package. The LMV796 and LMV797, offered in 5-lead SOT23 and 8-lead MSOP packages, target applications where system shutdown replaces localized shutdown requirements.

Unparalleled Bandwidth-to-Power Ratio
The high-efficiency of the LMV654 design provides 50 percent power savings over previous-generation operational amplifiers. It consumes only 400 uA while maintaining a 12 MHz unity-gain bandwidth and a low input referred noise voltage of 17nV/sqrt Hz. To improve the overall DC system accuracy across various input voltages and supply voltages, the amp provides an input offset voltage of less than 1.5 mV, 100 dB CMRR and 95 dB PSRR. The LMV654 is offered in a 14-lead TSSOP package.

These nine new products are designed on the VIP50 process, a silicon-on-insulator BiCMOS process with trimmable, highly-accurate thin-film resistors created exclusively for the development of advanced op amps and comparators. The VIP50 process allows National to design higher-performance precision op amps, along with the most power-efficient, low-voltage amplifiers on the market.
